The History Of Bloodhound Breed Bloodhound / bloodhounds / St. Hubert Hound Originally known as the Chien de St. Hubert, the Bloodhound originated in the Ardenne region of Central Europe, and has been used as a scent hound since the early 1800's. The Bloodhound is a very powerful scenting dog, with loose skin that hangs in deep folds, especially around the head and neck. Their natural tracking ability has made the breed invaluable to hunters, law enforcement and search and rescue for many years. Bloodhounds are large and somewhat shy, Bloodhounds get along very well with other dogs and love people- especially children. They are sensitive and somewhat shy, a trait that is very endearing and also makes them very intelligent and easy to train. These noble and dignified dogs have an appearance of wisdom and solemnity, and their very gentle and good- natured dispositions have made them quite popular throughout North America and abroad. Coat colors are black and tan, liver and tan and red with the darker colors sometimes faded with lighter hair. Due to their hound instincts bloodhounds should never be allowed to have free range without supervision, as their noses can lead them to trouble. Bloodhound Breed Standard The neck is very well muscled and has pendulous dewlap. Its back is extraordinarily strong for the dog's size. Powerful shoulders allow the dog to work for long hours without a break. The forelegs are straight, solid and muscular and the skull is very high and prominent. The tail is carried in an elegant curve above the topline of the back. The eyes are set deeply in their sockets. The lower lids of the eyes fall away to reveal part of the inner surface. The folds of the skin are said to aid in holding scent particles. Bloodhounds are very energetic and boisterous when young, usually determined and independent. Bloodhounds need firm but gentle training. A bloodhound owner needs to have plenty of patience and be consistent. A bloodhound usually has a mind of its own and can be hard headed. Many people can misjudge a dogs weight in general. The average weight of a Bloodhound Dog (male) is 90-110 pounds (41-50kg) average height in Dogs 25-27 inches (63-69cm). The average weight of a Bloodhound Bitch (female) is 80-100 pounds (36-45kg) average height is 23-25 inches (58-63cm). The greatest health concern in the
Bloodhound Breed is Bloat. This is when the stomach fills with air
if air is not released the stomach will twist this is called
torsion. Torsion causes the blood supply to cut off from the stomach
causing death. If you think your Bloodhound may be bloating with no
delay rush your Bloodhound to a vet with experience, every minute
matters. Some Bloodhounds tend to have entropion (inverted eyelids)
this is very common in the Bloodhound Breed. Exercise is reccomended
but you can also over exercise a growing puppy this can lead to
joint issues. Bloodhounds General Questions & Answers Does a Bloodhound make a good indoor pet? Are Bloodhounds athletic? How do Bloodhounds react to water? Do they run with coon dogs? I am thinking of buying a Bloodhound to start raising puppies is
